Statement regarding the novel coronavirus COVID-19 and APRIM 2020
We are closely monitoring the coronavirus situation and are taking into full consideration the geographic extent of the outbreaks as we adjust APRIM 2020 plans to ensure the safety of our attendees. Our response is being shaped by the latest advice from Australian health, foreign affairs authorities and the World Health Organisation (WHO).
Currently, infection rates in Australia are minimal, and we are working alongside the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre (PCEC) to ensure the safety of all exhibitors and attendees. The organising committee is exploring all options should the situation change, however at this point everything is continuing as planned and we continue to welcome delegates to attend the 14th Asia-Pacific Regional IAU Meeting in July.
Risk minimisation at physical meeting
Perth is often noted as the most isolated capital city in the world and has strict border security in place at airports. We will continue to monitor this, but the plan is to carry on the meeting as planned while minimising risk. We consider 3 levels of risk minimisation.
Governmental: The Australian Federal government has put in place precautionary travel bans for travellers from high risk countries: China, Iran, Italy and South Korea. Delegates coming from these countries will not be allowed to enter the country unless they have spent at least 2 weeks in a third-party country. Delegates from these countries are recommended to contact the event organisers.
Operational: Hand wash stations will be placed strategically throughout the venue. Delegates who are unwell will be asked to remain at home or in their hotel room and seek medical advice.
Personal: All attendees are aware of their own health. If you are unwell, please do not physically attend the meeting. While at the meeting, wash hands regularly and avoid touching face, eyes, nose, and mouth. Minimise physical contact with other delegates (a smile, a bow, or just saying “pleased to meet you” instead). If you need to cough or sneeze, cover your mouth and if possible, leave the room. If you feel unwell during the meeting, please self-isolate yourself to your hotel room/home and inform the meeting organisers immediately. If you are well, there is no need to wear a face mask in public.
The APRIM 2020 Organising Committee extends its sympathies and messages of support to all of those who have been affected by the outbreak to date – either directly or indirectly.
